Thermoelasticity play pivotal role in the development of science and technology especially aerospace engineering. The present volume entitled "Mathematical Thermoelastic Methods for Physics and Engineering" contains a collection of eleven chapters. The papers are devoted to topics in thermoelasticity. Most of them were published before in journal of international or national repute. To understand this book one must have knowledge of Residue Theory, Differential Equation, Analysis, Integral Transform and Thermoelasticity. The investigations in the present study are based on the research works of Sirakowski and Sun, Roychoudhury, Patel, Tonigawa and Komatsubara, Wankhede, Khobragade and Deshmukh K.C where they have studied the direct and inverse problems of thermoelasticity. Direct problems have applications in the field of Aeronautic whereas inverse problems are very important in view of its relevance to various industrial machines subjected to heating such as main shaft of lathe, turbine and roll of rolling mill. It is also useful to analyze the experimental data and measurement of aerodynamic heating.

Earthquake Analysis and Design of Industrial St...

Despite significant development in earthquake analysis and design in the last 50 years or more, different structures related to industry, infra structure and human habitats get destroyed with monotonic regularity under strong motion earthquake. Even the recent earthquake in Mexico in September 2017 killed a number of people and destroyed national assets amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Careful evaluation of the technology reveals that, despite significant development in earthquake engineering, most of the books that are available on the market for reference are primarily focused towards buildings and framed type structures. It is accepted that during an earthquake it is buildings that get destroyed most and has been the biggest killers of human life. Yet, there are a number of structures like retaining walls, water tanks, Bunkers, silos, tall chimneys, bridge piers etc that are equally susceptible to earthquake, and if damaged can cause serious trouble and great economic distress. Unfortunately, many of these systems are analyzed by techniques that are too simplified, unrealistic/obsolete or nothing is done about them, ignoring completely the seismic effects, as no guidelines exist for their analysis/design (like seismic analysis of counterfort retaining walls or dynamic pressures on bunker walls etc.). This highly informative book addresses many of these items for which there exists a significant gap in technology and yet remain an important life line of considerable commercial significance. The book is an outcome of authors' academic research and practice across the four continents (USA, Europe, Africa and Asia) in the last thirty two years, where many of these technologies have been put in practice, that got tested against real time earthquakes. All methods presented herein have been published previously in peer reviewed research journals and international conferences of repute before being put to practice. Professionals working in international EPC and consulting engineering firms, graduates taking advanced courses in earthquake engineering, doctoral scholars pursuing research in earthquake engineering in the area of dynamic soil structure interaction (DSSI) and advanced under graduates wanting to self-learn and update themselves on earthquake analysis and design are greatly benefited from this book.

Quicklet on Jules Verne's Journey to the Center...

ABOUT THE BOOK I have always loved science fiction. Even as a child, the stars on a clear, night sky brought to my mind the possibilities of interstellar travel; visits to the seaside on vacations made me think of living below the sea. This love of the impossible or in many cases, future-possible, lives in me even today, and that is why I have also tried putting some of my imagination on paper in the form of short stories. And even today, Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth remains one of my favorite works of fiction. MEET THE AUTHOR Sourya Biswas was a former risk analyst and have worked with several financial organizations of international repute, besides being a professional journalist with several articles published online. After 6 years of work, I decided to pursue my MBA from the University of Notre Dame. I have a Bachelors in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Information Technology. I'm also a member of high-IQ organizations Mensa and Triple Nine Society and am negotiating with publishers to get his science fiction work published. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Journey to the Center of the Earth, or Voyage au centre de la Terre in the original French, was published for the first time in 1864. The book was inspired by Charles Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man of 1863. This was a period in which there was a sea-change in how scientific circles perceived the history of the earth. Biblical notions of the earth being only a few thousand years old were being gradually abandoned and the study of geological ages had begun. In that context, the book was an educational treatise in addition to an entertaining read. Though science today discounts the possibility of subterranean worlds populated by ancient creatures existing miles below our feet, it is a fascinating read nevertheless. Granted that Journey to the Center of the Earth does not seem as scientifically feasible as undersea travel presented in Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, but Jules Verne's imagination is hard to ignore. And there's a lot of genuine science in the story which, considering the time it was written in, is uncannily accurate. Buy a copy to keep reading!

Quicklet on Howard Pyle's The Merry Adventures ...

ABOUT THE BOOK I had heard of Robin Hood even before I read about Robin Hood, courtesy my grandmother. After all, the whole concept of a capped archer and his merry men 'taking from the rich to give to the poor' was an attractive proposition for a bedside story. It was only later that I realized that even 'taking from the rich' amounted to crime of some sorts. It was some years later that I came across The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. Like many before me, and am sure, like many in future, I enjoyed it immensely. From Robin's transformation from a common man to outlaw, to the many memorable characters like Little John, Friar Tuck and the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, the book captivated me. Of course, no description of Howard Pyle's work is complete without mention of the wonderful illustrations that helped the reader visualize the 'merry adventures.' However, I must warn the reader that the language is a bit archaic and may seem difficult at first. MEET THE AUTHOR Sourya is a former risk analyst and has worked with several financial organizations of international repute, besides being a professional journalist with several articles published online. After 6 years of work, he decided to pursue his MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He holds a Bachelors in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Information Technology. He is also a member of high-IQ organizations Mensa and Triple Nine Society and am negotiating with publishers to get his science fiction work published. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Howard Pyle is not the originator of the Robin Hood legend; in fact, ballads about Robin Hood have been sung for centuries before Pyle decided to put pen to paper. What Pyle did was to present several stories in a cohesive form, accompanied by beautiful illustrations. He also altered the content to make the book suitable for a young audience. For example, while the ballads described Robin Hood as a resourceful robber out for personal gain, Pyle represented him as a voice of justice, who robbed from the rich to give to the poor while himself living a life of hardship in the forests. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood was the first novel that Pyle attempted, after he had had some success publishing illustrated poems and fairy tales in New York. The book was published in 1883 by noted New York publisher Charles Scribner's Sons, who have since then, worked with doyens of American literature like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Robert Heinlein and Stephen King. Buy a copy to keep reading!
